Three-Time Oscar®-Nominee Alberto Iglesias to Compose Original Score for Scott Cooper’s Currently-Titled Out of the Furnace

    06.05.2012

(Beverly Hills, Calif.) June 5, 2012 – Relativity Media has closed a deal with three-time Oscar®-nominated composer Alberto Iglesias (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy) to score its upcoming gripping and gritty drama currently-titled Out of the Furnace, written and directed by the critically-acclaimed Scott Cooper (Crazy Heart) and starring Oscar®-winner Christian Bale (The Fighter), Oscar®-nominated Woody Harrelson (The Messenger), Oscar®-nominated Casey Affleck (The Assassination of Jesse James By the Coward Robert Ford), Oscar®-winner Forest Whitaker (The Last King of Scotland), Willem Dafoe (Platoon, Shadow of the Vampire), Oscar®-nominated Sam Shepard (The Right Stuff) and Zoe Saldana (Avatar) as the lead roles.

Perhaps best known for his landmark collaborations with director Pedro Almodovar, Iglesias is Spain's most acclaimed composer. In addition to his work with Almodovar, Iglesias has received Oscar® nominations for his scores for Tomas Alfredson’s Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Fernando Meirelles' The Constant Gardener and Marc Forster's The Kite Runner. Iglesias also received BAFTA nominations for all three scores and a Golden Globe® nomination for The Kite Runner. For Almodovar's Volver, Iglesias won the European Film Award for Best Score and the World Soundtrack Award for Composer of the Year. After winning his 10th Goya Award (Spain's top film honor) this year for Almodovar’s The Skin I Live In, Iglesias became the all-time leading Goya recipient in the history of Spanish cinema. Iglesias was also honored with the Composer of the Year Award at the 2011 Hollywood Film Festival, honored alongside such stars as George Clooney, Michelle Williams and Christopher Plummer

Iglesias has also teamed with American directors such as Oscar®-winner Steven Soderbergh (Che starring Benicio Del Toro), Oscar®-winner Oliver Stone (Comandante) and Oscar®-nominated John Malkovich (The Dancer Upstairs). His work with Almodovar includes 2009's Broken Embraces starring Penelope Cruz as well as All About My Mother, Bad Education and the Oscar®-winning Talk to Her and Volver. He has also worked with such top Spanish directors as Julio Medem and Carlos Saura.

The currently-titled Out of the Furnace tells a story about fate, circumstance and justice. Russell (Bale) and his younger brother Rodney (Affleck) live in the economically depressed Rust Belt, and have always dreamed of escaping and finding better lives.  But when a cruel twist of fate lands Russell in prison, his brother is lured into one of the most violent and ruthless crime rings in the Northeast – a mistake that will almost cost him everything. Once released, Russell must choose between his own freedom, or risk it all to seek justice for his brother.

Iglesias was represented by Robert Messinger of First Artist Management in the deal with Relativity.

Producing are Appian Way’s Leonardo DiCaprio (J. Edgar) and Jennifer Killoran (The Ides of March) alongside Scott Free’s Ridley Scott (The Grey), Tony Scott (Man on Fire) and Michael Costigan (American Gangster) as well as Relativity’s CEO Ryan Kavanaugh (The Fighter).

Relativity Media will release the film theatrically in the U.S.  Red Granite, the Los Angeles based film production, finance and international sales company acquired foreign rights outside of the U.S. and will handle international sales.  Red Granite international President Danny Dimbort and Co-President Christian Mercuri shopped the film to buyers in Cannes.
