Relativity & Atlas Join Forces On Multi-Picture Deal
12.04.2008
Atlas Entertainment will produce a minimum of six films over the next three years for Relativity Media, LLC, CEO Ryan Kavanaugh and Atlas Co-Founder Charles Roven announced today. Steve Alexander, who recently joined Atlas from CAA, will oversee all the projects on behalf of Atlas and produce some of the films.
The first title produced under this new arrangement is Season of the Witch, which re-teams Nicolas Cage with Gone in 60 Seconds director Dominic Sena. Season of the Witch tells the story of 14th-century knights transporting a girl suspected of being the witch who has spread the Black Plague. The supernatural thriller, from writer Bragi Schut and produced by Charles Roven and Atlas producing partner Alex Gartner, also stars Ron Perlman. Principal photography began on November 6th in Austria and Hungary. Cage and Roven previously collaborated on City of Angels.
”Chuck is a unique producer in that he looks at films from a creative perspective, but also is very attentive to the bottom line profitability. There are few producers who have the amazing visceral talents Chuck and the Atlas team have and still look at the overall package from an investor’s standpoint. This was clearly demonstrated in Atlas’s films in the last year alone: The Dark Knight, Get Smart and The Bank Job. They are a perfect fit for our business.”
“The Bank Job was such a great experience,” said Roven. “When Relativity decided to expand their single picture business, we were delighted that Ryan asked us to increase our output with them.”
“As a former agent and producer, I have experienced that the key to success is pairing great talent with smart people on both the business and creative side,” said Atlas Entertainment’s Steve Alexander. “You combine Chuck’s reputation for making quality films with Ryan, who is one of the smartest financial minds in Hollywood, and the end result is an unstoppable partnership.”
Relativity Media has had a longtime financing deal with Sony Pictures, who, earlier this year, signed a first-look deal with Atlas Entertainment. Both RML and Atlas are confident this new arrangement will present new opportunities for their Sony relationships.
Andrew Marcus, Tucker Tooley and Philip Elway negotiated the transaction on behalf of Relativity Media, LLC. Jake Bloom and Tom Collier of Bloom Hergott Diemer Rosenthal & LaViolette, together with Alan Glazer of Atlas, negotiated the transaction on behalf of Atlas Entertainment.
